The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated 78 per cent of the research in Business and Management as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (3*/4*), placing the Departments of Management and Accounting and Finance combined amongst the leading schools in the UK according to all the various rankings.
As a relatively small department, our research and impact is focused in areas such as organisational innovation, gender, international business management, social relationships and sustainability, which engage critically with the wider social sciences disciplines.
We also have strong methodological expertise in quantitative methods as well as in innovative qualitative approaches which are a key part of the department's Centre for Action Research and Critical Inquiry in Organization). Our research is recognised internationally, receiving funding from bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Leverhulme Trust and British Academy.
Staff publish regularly in leading academic journals in organisation studies, management science, operations and the wider social sciences disciplines such as Environment and Planning A, Journal of Economic Geography, Human Relations, Organization Studies, Gender, Work and Organization, International Journal of Production Research, Sociology and Omega. They are also represented on the editorial boards of such journals and engaged in international research networks and conferences.
The department has a strong research culture with a good record of collaborative work, visiting speakers, cross-faculty research initiatives and a supportive atmosphere for both staff and PhD students. Research also informs our teaching at all levels and is reflected in our engagement with outside bodies.
The department has a strong affinity with the social science and STEMM disciplines, and many staff are actively involved in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law research groups, and University Research Institutes – Cabot Institute and Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research.
The Centre for Action Research and Critical Inquiry in Organisations is committed to researching participative and capacity-building ways in organisations and communities, with a focus on sustainability, social justice, gender, and inclusivity.
