My current research interests relate to methods of assessing animal welfare, particularly investigating whether 'indicators' of animal welfare correlate with the preferences that animals themselves make for different housing environments. This work is funded by a BBSRC Programme Grant (joint PI Professor Mike Mendl, and collaborators at Oxford and RVC). I also supervise PhD students working on equine cognition (Waltham, Becky Hothersall), feather pecking in chickens (Stonegate, Sarah Lambton), links between animal welfare and immune function (VTRI, Cathy Trickett)and the capacity of non-human animals to show 'empathic' responses (BBSRC, Jo Edgar). Other current work includes overall assessments of laying hen welfare (Defra, with Dr Chris Sherwin), reducing the problem of bone fractures in laying hens (Defra, with Mr Lindsay WIlkins) and reducing the problem of feather pecking (Defra with Professor Marian Dawkins at Oxford, and Mr Steve Brown).
