Areas of expertise My main areas of interest fall within two main areas and the inter-relationship between them; social divisions and socio-economic inequality, and space and social exclusion. In particular, I am interested in the social division of ethnicity and gender, in social mobility, labour market and from school to work. Additionally, I am interested in quantitative research methods such as multilevel analysis and spatial analysis.

Currently I am involved in two research projects. The first one, part of the Leverlhulme programme, looks at ethnic residential segregation and the transition from school to work. The second research project concerns religious diversity, community cohesion and the 2001 census and is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. At the moment I have an ESRC grant application under review in which I and my co-applicant T. Modood propose to study the question whether Muslims in the UK face an extra cultural penalty due to their faith background.
