Areas of expertise My research focuses on the structure and function of the coronavirus replication machinery with the goal of identifying novel targets for the development of anti-coronaviral drugs. I have also established and apply coronavirus reverse genetics to the development of novel, live, attenuated coronavirus vaccines. Currently, I am particularly interested in coronavirus proteins that modulate the innate immune response (especially the type 1 interferon response), the adaptation of these proteins during transmission across species, and the manipulation of these proteins to produce coronavirus vaccines. My research includes the study of human coronaviruses, in particular the SARS-coronavirus (SARSCoV), and animal coronaviruses of veterinary importance, for example, Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). I also study the genetics and pathogenesis of Murine hepatitis virus (MHV), which shares many similarities with SARSCoV.
