| Areas of expertise |
For over fifteen years I have been responsible for initiating and managing research projects concerned with understanding the underlying factors responsible for welfare problems associated with modern poultry production systems. These have included both meat type broiler chickens and laying hens housed in non-cage systems, where we have recently identified the occurrence of broken bones to be a major threat to bird welfare. This has become a particularly important area since impending EU legislation has promoted the widespread adoption of what had previously been considered to be high welfare, alternative housing systems. My expertise has resulted in invitations to collaborate in and provide welfare experience to a number of current and proposed projects both within the UK and Internationally. I teach on the MSc course in Meat Science and the Animal Welfare & Behaviour BSc course and deliver Animal and Poultry Welfare Training courses to the meat production industry.
