thinking through performance
memories of movies
Areas of expertise
There are two strands to my research, which take place in parallel and in ongoing communication; thinking through performance and discursive publication or paper presentation.
Practical enquiries have been conducted with Uninvited Guests, the Bristol-based company Clarke directs. Since 1998 they have worked in various contexts and constellations, focusing mainly on performance but also producing installation and digital media. Uninvited Guests’ work represents a contemporary reality, in which memories of movies are as much part of our experience as intimate dialogues with lovers.
In September 2008 I commenced the Great Western Research Fellowship, Performing the Archive: the Future of the Past. The project aims to develop the interrelationship and interactivity between the archives and communities of practitioners, scholars and audiences. Research will explore how academics and artists can use and re-use documents of past events, to inflect and inspire their own performance practice and their critical thinking or writing.
