Microbiological and geochemistry of ‘extreme’ environments, astrobiological implications.
My current NERC postdoctoral research focuses on quantifying the activity (in particular C and N cycling) of microbial communities in sediment filled depressions (cryoconite holes) on the surface of arctic glaciers. Ongoing fieldwork is focused on Svalbard and Greenland. In my prior postdoctoral position at the University of Toronto, I worked as part of the Indiana-Princeton-Tennessee NASA Astrobiological Initiative (IPTAI) investigating the deep subsurface of Precambrian shield rocks, accessed via deep mines, as analogues for possible extant subterranean life on Mars. My PhD investigated the metal cycling of microorganisms in relict hydrothermal vent fields on the Mid Atlantic Ridge.
