Areas of expertise The aim of my research is to explore new treatments for patients with degenerative ataxias and similar neurodegenerative disorders. My research involves investigating the potential of human bone marrow-derived stem cells (commonly known as mesenchymal stem cells) to promote neuronal cell survival.

The transplantation of bone marrow-derived stem cells may provide an effective therapy for neuronal injury. The mechanisms of stem cell-induced neuroprotection are being investigated within our research group at the Burden Centre (Frenchay Hospital, Bristol). This research will therefore provide vital information concerning the neuroprotective properties of stem cells, which is a necessary step in designing stem cell-based therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
