I am currently studying the microbial lipids preserved in silica sinters from various geothermal springs in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), New Zealand. Our aim is to apply biomarker distributions to reconstruct past and present microbiology and environmental conditions. We approach this by comparing lipid biomarkers between different settings, and assessing the preservation of microbial lipids in active and inactive sinters.
