Areas of expertise I am a Research Associate on the Systems Practice in Engineering (SPiE) Project and will be working on a piece of collaborative action research with Research Engineers and academic staff in the Systems Centre, exploring: complex problem solving, individual differences, human relations and leadership in academic and industrial contexts. I also work in a liaison role with supervisors on the EngD programme and I am building interdisciplinary research collaborations in the UK and internationally.

My PhD and postdoctoral research so far has focused on human responses to and management of natural hazard risk. This included working across multi-hazards (floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and volcanoes) and across cultures (UK, USA, Belize, Colombia and Ecuador). Much of the focus of this work was on understanding relationships between scientists, authorities and communities and on how risks could be managed and communicated more effectively.
Media experience I worked with the Weather Channel and Discovery Channel in the USA during spring and summer 2009, on programmes relating to tornado and severe weather risks and was featured in two '60 second psych' podcasts and articles for Scientific American. I appeared on local and national radio in the USA and local radio stations in Colombia whilst working on volcanic risk. I have also contributed to newspaper articles and radio programmes focusing on human reactions to natural hazard risk in the UK and Canada.
