I have worked extensively on the history of convict transportation to the Australian penal colonies. I am the author of a number of articles on that subject and also of a prize-winning book, Gender, crime and empire: convicts, settlers and the state in early colonial Australia (2007). I also work on nineteenth-century street literature, street performance and empire, looking for instance at how ideas about empire, race, transportation and emigration were represented in forms like popular ballads. I am currently (2009-2011) a Sackler-Caird Fellow at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich where I am researching a project entitled 'Australia bound: convict voyaging, 1788-1868'. This project brings together a range of different dimensions including social, cultural and medical history.
