My research covers three over-lapping areas: social stratification, social and political attitudes and sociological methodology. In the area of social and political values, I have been particularly interested in social attitudes and political behaviour in Scotland, and was co-director of the 1997 Scottish Election Survey and co-founder of the now annual Scottish Social Attitudes Surveys.
My work on social stratification is currently focussed in two areas. Firstly, it considers the relationship between social class and education, with particular reference to the work of Bourdieu and the use of notions of capital to redefine social class. In addition, I am currently developing work on class identity, particularly the changing (or unchanging) nature of class identity in the post-war period.
