My research is focussed on gait mechanics in dogs and horses. I use a variety of techniques including combining force, morphometric and kinematic data in an inverse dynamics approach, and electromyographic analysis of gait. All of the data we collect is non-invasive. We have discovered that dogs are ‘handed’ to some extent, and despite appearing symmetric in their gait, the mechanical work done across the bilateral limb joints varies according to the dominant side. In addition to our work with normal dogs, we are also interested in breakdown of gait, and recovery from various surgical procedures for specific joint disorders. In medium- and large-sized dogs, the stifle and elbow joints are common sites of orthopaedic disease. The stifle joint is often subjected to orthopaedic surgery to change its geometry and mechanical function in response to injury of the cranial cruciate ligament, and our work is designed to evaluate outcome.
