My primary research interest is to investigate the molecular packing in amorphous polymeric and oligomeric systems, in order to gain a more complete understanding of their physico-chemical properties. The main focus of my work is on materials which are of major importance both in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where they are commonly used for the encapsulation, stabilization, and release of active ingredients (eg: flavors, drugs and nutrients). A multidisciplinary approach, combining several techniques is used to study these systems in order to establish correlations between molecular packing and the barrier properties of these materials. The key technique used in our lab to characterise the molecular organisation of these materials is called Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS).
