Areas of expertise I work primarily on the political and intellectual history of modern Britain. I am interested in the development of ideas about 'public opinion' and changing conceptions of the British political system. On the more political side of my work, I am concerned with the relationship between political and visual culture in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain. I am particularly interested in how changes in political communications - especially the emergence of more pictorial media - impact upon politics.

I have written about the history of class in modern Britain, the development of trade union legislation, and the changing nature of social history in Britain since the 1960s. Recent work has addressed the history of the political poster in Britain, and debates about the minimum wage in Edwardian Britain.
