Areas of expertise My research primarily employs marine microfossils to study the interrelationships between palaeoclimatic changes and the ecology and evolution of marine plankton.

My main research themes are geological examples of ocean acidification. Human emissions are making the oceans more acidic. Therefore I use the geological record to determine how long the Earth's system takes to neutralise this change and how the marine plankton reacts to these environmental changes to better inform what might happen in the future.

To use the geological record to derive this information, we have to have a precise understanding of the biology of the organisms and see how the environmental information is stored in the shells of marine organisms.

Another important part of my research focusses on the time scales of recovery after mass extinctions. All of these questions address the main question the link between abrupt climate change on the extinction and evolution of marine organisms.
