Areas of expertise I am a UK qualified lawyer who has specialised in the rights of persons deprived of their liberty and the prevention of torture and other ill-treatment. I completed an M.A in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the University of London in 2000, and joined the Association for the Prevention of Torture, an international NGO based in Geneva, where I was in charge of the UN and Legal Programme. While at the APT, I was closely involved with the final UN negotiations on the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture (OPCAT) and developed and led the APT's first global campaign on the OPCAT.

In addition to my UN work, in 2002, I also co-organised and participated in the expert working group that drafted the Robben Island Guidelines for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (RIG), which were subsequently adopted by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
