Areas of expertise My research interests are in the following areas:

Mechanisms controlling synchronous firing of hypothalamic oxytocinergic neurones

I am interested in the autoregulatory actions of dendritically-released oxytocin in controlling synaptic inputs to oxytocinergic neurones during birth and lactation, and the importance of afferent modulation in determining burst firing and synchronicity. I am also interested in the adaptations shown by oxytocinergic neurones at the end of pregnancy that promote synchronous bursting activity, and the role of steroids in regulating these adaptations.

Central actions of peptides in the limbic system

Hypothalamic neuroepeptides such as oxytocin and corticoptrophin act as neuromodulators in the limbic system and are involved in social, maternal and stress-related behaviour. I am interested in the cellular mechanisms by which neuropeptides exert their effects, and how these mechanisms are modulated by the genomic and membrane actions of steroids (including neurosteroids).
