The introduction and development of beating heart surgery (1995-to date) has involved: i) technical innovations, the conduct of prospective randomised trials and monitoring of early and late patient outcomes, ii) published evaluation confirming reduction of in-hospital mortality and major economic benefits to the Health Service by the adoption of this technique, and iii) mentoring of surgeons in this country and abroad Cardiopulmonary bypass pathophysiology and myocardial protection in adult and pediatric heart surgery. |
