| Areas of expertise | My research is currently focussed on the neural basis of recognition memory, our ability to recognise whether objects are novel or familiar, and episodic memory our ability to remember episodes and events from the past. In particular I am interested in the ways in which different brain regions work together to support our ability to learn and remember such different types of information. Currently I am focussing on the roles played by the perirhinal cortex, prefrontal cortex and the hippocampal formation in both recognition and episodic memory and so to examine the contribution of these distinct neural regions in cognition a number of complementary behavioural, lesion and pharmacological techniques are in use in the laboratory. Using these techniques the research group have been examining the role of different neurotransmitter systems (eg. glutamate, acetylcholine) and intracellular signalling cascades in the encoding, storage and retrieval of memory information. |
