My early research interests were into the effects of injury on the peripheral nervous system, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms which contribute to the abnormal sensibility and pain that frequently accompany peripheral nerve injury. This work encompassed several themes including: abnormal properties of injured and regenerated sensory neurones; changes in the patterns of central connectivity of regenerated sensory neurones; the success of regeneration of unmyelinated nerve fibres; the effects of peripheral nerve injury on distant parts of the nervous system, particularly the contralateral (mirror-image) nerve.
