We have created some pathways through the Diploma to help you choose your units if you have a particular theme which interests you or is important to your work. To help you plan your route through the programme we provide a Timetable of units for the Diploma.
Having completed your basic training in teaching in the health professions through the PG Cert in TLHP (or its equivalent), you may be keen to take on more of a leadership role in relation to educational activities. Certainly, there is a need for intelligent, strategic leadership in education and training in the health professions, informed by the latest research and evidence. This Pathway will provide a thorough grounding for anyone wanting to take on such leadership roles, providing evidence to employers of significant commitment and understanding in this area. Equally, specific individual Units, e.g. 'Supporting the Struggling Professional' will be of interest to many as single or stand alone Units.
The need to teach and demonstrate professionalism has become crucial at all levels in the training of health professionals. An understanding of what this means and of the various topics, issues and concepts that relate to professionalism are central to this Pathway. By taking any of the Units listed below, and particularly by undertaking the Pathway as a whole, you will be demonstrating a strong commitment to the support and development of professionalism in the learners you teach and in your own educational practice. You may also wish to move our understanding of this complex area forward by using this Pathway as a preparation for doing research into professionalism in health professional education - something that is increasingly needed and valued.
Technology, in the widest sense of the word, has had an increasing impact and utility in education. How do we ensure that the reasons for using technology in teaching are based on sound educational decisions? Is the technology leading the learning? What does a particular technology add to the learning process that cannot be provided in another way? How do we assess the cost-benefits of using technology in our teaching and support of learning? These and other questions will be of interest to anyone wishing to take one or more of the units on this Pathway.
Pathways are not mandatory - you do not have to select one and do those units exclusively - they are merely there to help guide you in your choice of units if you would like to combine units to make a programme with a particular theme relevant to your work and studies. Please discuss with a tutor if you have any questions about pathways or unit choice.
