
An afternoon workshop preceding a performance of Edmund Rubbra's Sinfonia Sacra
(The Resurrection), given by the University of Bristol Choral Society & Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Pickard.

Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986) considered his Ninth Symphony (Sinfonia Sacra) his most personal achievement. Yet, since it’s première in 1973, it has received only one further public performance, until this evening’s concert. This workshop explores a deeply felt, and highly unusual work, placing it in the context of the composer’s life and music and considering its place in the cycle of eleven symphonies that occupied him from 1935 to 1979.
