Although dominated by the South Bank Exhibition, the 1951 Festival of Britain also included the London Season of the Arts, the largest festival of British music ever mounted. This enormous undertaking involved all the nation’s major ensembles performing British music at venues throughout London, and striving to make the programme as comprehensive as possible. Over 60 years on, Professor Lew’s lecture will examine how the programming of the season illuminated the British musical repertoire at a moment of relative consensus.
