British Academy Postdoctoral Fellows: call for applications

[Posted on 06 July 2012]

The Music Department at the University of Bristol welcomes applications through this scheme. This year’s deadline for applications to the scheme will be 10 October 2012. Further details are available.

BA Postdoctoral Fellowships offer three years of funded research at a UK higher education institution. The application process will open in August 2012 and the institutional deadline for submission of draft applications through the Music Department of the University of Bristol is Friday 7 September. Applications will then be assessed internally and a selection made of the applications we are able to host.

When preparing your application please note the following points:

  • The BA guidelines indicate that the scheme is open to three groups of applicant: ‘British citizens; anyone of whatever nationality who has obtained (or expects to have obtained by 1 April 2013) a doctorate from a UK university; and EEA (European Economic Area) nationals (regardless of whether or not they have a UK doctorate)’.
  • Your doctorate needs to have been awarded within the past three years

Following initial assessment, if we feel able to host yours we will let you know within two weeks. We will then assist you in the preparation of the final version before the October deadline for submission to the Academy. The draft application comprises:

  1. academic CV
  2. approx. 500 word summary of your previous research
  3. research proposal – this should follow the ‘Structure for proposals’ outlined by the BA and summarised below

Please email your application to: Professor John Pickard, Head of Subject, Department of Music, University of Bristol.

Structure for proposals

Title of proposed research

Abstract of proposed research (maximum 120 words)

Proposed programme (about 800 words)

Please give a detailed description of the proposed research and the methodology. Applicants should be aware of the importance that the assessors place on the scholarly importance of the project and on its feasibility, especially in terms of the proposed methodology and timescale.

Planned research outputs (about 300 words)

Please state the type of output, e.g. monograph, journal article(s), etc expected under ‘planned research outputs’ and give more detail about potential publishers etc under plans for publication. You should include any specific major conference presentations.

Plan of action (about 300 words)

Please indicate here a clear timetable for your research programme over the three years of the Fellowship. Try to be as realistic as possible, but keep in mind that research programmes will develop over time and this plan of action is not something that is expected to account for every minute of the three years, and is not unchangeable. But your chances of award will be affected by the assessors' perception of how viable and realistic this plan is.

Plans for publication / dissemination (about 300 words)

Please state the type of output, e.g. monograph, journal article(s), etc expected under ‘planned research outputs’ and give more detail about potential publishers etc under plans for publication. You should include any specific major conference presentations.
