Press release issued: 2 November 2001

UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
Boateng lecture cancelled

The public lecture that Paul Boateng, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, was due to give in Bristol tonight has had to be cancelled. Mr Boateng is required at the House of Commons for a key debate.

The free event was part of Bristol University's Celebration 2001 - a three-month programme of lectures, music and drama marking the 125th anniversary of the opening of University College, Bristol.

Mr Boateng, who is a Bristol University graduate, has apologised to those who were planning to go to his lecture.

University spokesman Barry Taylor said: "This event had aroused a lot of public interest, and we very much regret that members of the public will be disappointed.

"We were prepared to resort to a live video link with Mr Boateng, but he was not able to guarantee his availability. We fully understand his position and hope to welcome him back to the University at a later date."
