A day of horsing around

Horse enthusiasts will be able to find out about the latest advances in equine medicine at Bristol University's Equine Centre Open Day on Saturday, July 13.

The Open Day is a unique opportunity for people to see the Equine Centre's working environment by visiting the Equine Diagnostic Centre, the Equine Sports Medicine Centre and the stables. Talks and demonstrations on poor performance, rehabilitation, equine dentistry and clinical cases will run throughout the day.

The Equine Centre, a UK leader, will demonstrate its approach to welfare through its three aims - science, education and clinical work. There will be an educational workshop for those interested in becoming an equine vet, nurse, scientist or technician. In addition to the demonstrations there will be short lectures on topics ranging from colic to first aid. There will also be an Equine Question Time with the Equine Practice Vets and other clinicians.

Other attractions will include farrier and saddlery demonstrations, heavy horses and rare breeds, an exhibition of 'western riding' and pony club events. Jo Trego, champion endurance rider, and her horse Oliver Taboo, will also be on hand to talk to visitors, as well as racehorse trainer Dr Jeremy Naylor.

Professor Avril Waterman-Pearson, Head of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, said: "The University sees the public launch of the Centre as a great chance to develop further its relationship with horse owners through continuing dialogue. A collaboration that will provide a wealth of experience to advance research and clinical expertise."

The open day will run from 10 am to 4 pm, with an official opening by Jenny Pitman, OBE, the well known trainer at 11.30 am. The entrance fee will be £10 per car for four passengers, £5 on foot and children under 14 will be admitted free. People are encouraged to make a day of it and bring a picnic.
