Thousands of people will have the opportunity to visit four Bristol University buildings on Saturday [September 13] for Doors Open Day.

The four buildings are the Baptist College, Royal Fort House, Synthetic Chemistry and Wills Memorial Building.

Founded in 1679, the Baptist College is the oldest Baptist College in the world.  Built of red 'Old Basing' bricks with Bath stone facings, the College is one of the few important buildings by architect George Oatley built of brick.  Inside the materials of oak, stone and plaster with no excessive ornamentation are typically Oatley.

Royal Fort House, an elegant, classically designed Georgian house, so-named because of its erection on an English Civil War 'Royal Fort' site, was completed around 1791 by Thomas Tyndall who lived there with his family for about 30 years.  Members of the public can see the elegant rococo stucco work in the staircase hall, the Quebec pine carving in the Dining Room, the attractive Withdrawing Room and The Parlour.

Energy efficient and environmentally friendly, the Synthetic Chemistry Building stands in a prominent position overlooking the city and benefits inside from maximum use of natural lighting.  It was selected by the Bristol Evening Post as one of the best seven modern buildings in the city. Working closely with Bristol's chemists, the architectural team produced a design that exceeds the highest industrial standards for health, safety and the environment.

Visible from many miles away, the Wills Memorial Building is a vibrant, working part of the University.  People can see the grand Entrance Hall, the Old Council Chamber, Reception Room, Library and the magnificent Great Hall.  Unfortunately the Tower is currently closed due to essential maintenance work.

Stewart Mossman, Acting Assistant Director (Public Programmes), said: 'We are delighted to be able to take part in Doors Open Day once again.  The University buildings open have something for everyone.'

The Old Baptist College is located on Woodland Road, Clifton, Bristol. Royal Fort House is located adjacent to University Walk and Tyndall Avenue, Clifton, Bristol.  Synthetic Chemistry is located on Cantocks Close,Clifton, Bristol and the Wills Memorial Building is located on Park Street, Clifton, Bristol.
