Press release issued: 14 October 2004

The South West Angel and Investor Network (SWAIN) is celebrating after brokering its first investment deal on behalf of software company Mobile Life, based at Bristol University.

The South West Angel and Investor Network (SWAIN) is celebrating after brokering its first investment deal on behalf of software company Mobile Life, based at Bristol University.  The company were referred to SWAIN by SETsquared at the University of Bristol, a joint venture between the enterprise partnership of the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey to support new businesses.

Mobile Life was established in October 2002, to help businesses benefit from the growing market for mobile based applications and services. It works with some of the UK's top companies like Orange and Motorola.

Following the referral, Mobile Life gave a presentation at an introduction forum held by SWAIN to bring investors and businesses together. At the forum, Mobile Life revealed an innovative software product called SlipStream - a web content publishing solution that simplifies the task of creating websites viewable on mobile phones and PDAs. SlipStream allows web designers to develop mobile compatible websites and then generates content compatible with mobile phones.

As a result of the introduction forum, a private investor has agreed to make a significant investment of both time and money in Mobile Life, and is joining the company as an Executive Director.

Paul Harrod, Business Support Manager at the University of Bristol's SETsquared centre, said: "This is extremely good news as it demonstrates that universities are having a significant impact on new company creation, both in terms of the on-going support that we provide but also by opening doors to opportunities such as this."

SWAIN's Network Director, Philip Tellwright, added: "We are delighted to announce the news of our first deal. Mobile Life is a dynamic company with a fantastic product and we will watch its progress with interest."

SETsquared incubates early-stage, technology ventures that have high growth potential both from within and outside the universities. It accelerates a venture's progress from initial idea to business start-up by combining the research strengths of the universities with commercial and financial experience from the private sector.

SETsquared provides:

  •  Business mentoring and guidance from experienced entrepreneurs
  • Access to industry specialists, business professionals and the investment community
  • Low-cost serviced office space in Bath, Bristol, Guildford, Southampton and Swindon
