Did you know that more than seven million people in the UK have long-term health problems due to arthritis, back pain or a related condition?  Members of the public will have the opportunity to find out more at a unique dayschool taking place at Bristol University next week.

Dr Trish Dolan, Senior Lecturer, and Dr Mike Adams, Senior Research Fellow, in the Department of Anatomy, will be looking at the beneficial effects of exercise, diet and body care, whilst also looking at more specific ailments, in particular, arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, fractures and ‘dowagers hump’.

They will also discuss the many aspects associated with the care of the human skeleton, its associated muscles and their relationship with the ageing process.

Dr Dolan said: “Arthritis and back pain are the most common causes of time off work in both men and women.

“The course will communicate simple steps that people can build into their everyday lives to help them avoid the later consequences of these conditions.”

Dr Adams said: “The course will give an overview of what goes wrong with hip and knee joints in arthritis, and how you can develop back pain.

“Suggestions on how to avoid these complaints will also be given, based on the latest science (and some hunches and guess work!).”

The dayschool, organised by the University’s Public Programmes Office, will take place on Saturday 5 February, Room F16, 8-10 Berkeley Square, Bristol from 10 am to 4 pm.

Tickets are priced at  £20.  For further information please contact Diane Thorne, Public Programmes Office, 8-10 Berkeley Square, Bristol or tel 0117 928 7160.
