Recognising excellence: nominations for Honours

22 September 2010

As Vice-Chancellor, I am often asked to nominate individuals for an Honour and I am keen that any recommendations I make include appropriate submissions from the University.

As Vice-Chancellor, I am often asked to nominate individuals for an Honour and I am keen that any recommendations I make include appropriate submissions from the University.

While I am aware of many of the accomplishments of colleagues, it would be impossible for me to know about every single one and so I would value suggestions from colleagues as to individuals from within the University they feel should be considered for an Honour.

Our University is a rich and diverse community and putting forward someone for an Honour is yet another way we can mark the fabulous achievements of our people.

Of course, individuals achieve many great things across the University on a frequent basis. However, it is the exceptional or remarkable that I believe we should put forward for consideration, whether this has been achieved in relation to, or outside of, an individual’s role at the University.

I must be clear that in suggesting an individual, there is no guarantee that the individual will be submitted for an Honour and, if a submission is made, there is no guarantee that the individual concerned will make it on to the Honours list.

I would also ask that any suggestions made are done so in strict confidence.

When suggesting an individual for consideration, please include the following:

  • a summary of up to 300 words detailing the specific achievement or the reason why, in your opinion, the individual merits consideration for an Honour
  • the period of time over which the achievement took place
  • the individual’s name and work contact details
  • your name and work contact details.

Details about the Honours system are available here.

Please note, once recommendations are received, it will not be possible to enter into further correspondence. Suggestions made will be considered for submission for the June 2011 Honours list.

All suggestions should be emailed to David Alder, Director of Communications david.alder@bristol.ac.uk, by Tuesday 30 November 2010. A further communication will be sent in June 2011 requesting nominations for the 2012 New Year Honours list.
