It is with great sadness that we report that Professor AW Brian Simpson died on 10 January 2011 at his home in Sandwich, Kent.

Following a successful career in both the United Kingdom and the United States, he retired to England and accepted a Visiting Chair at the University of Bristol’s School of Law in 2009. Professor Simpson was a leading scholar whose expertise covered areas as diverse as human rights, legal history and the common law.

His erudition, wit, sense of humour and generosity made him a distinguished scholar, a popular teacher, a wonderful colleague and a good friend. He will be missed sorely.
