Decorative metalworker Willa Ashworth has donated a spherical metal artwork to the University’s Botanic Garden.

Ashworth’s sculpture, which was designed to complement the natural surroundings of the garden, went on display at a combined Bristol Honey Festival and National Gardens Scheme Open Day event at the Botanic Garden in September to celebrate the world of bees.

The festival highlighted the maintenance of healthy ecosystems and the importance of bees and other pollinators for food production, and featured talks, interactive displays and research by the School of Biological Sciences into the current decline in bee and pollinator numbers.

Visitors enjoyed the garden’s early autumn colours, and the sculpture generated much interest. Ashworth said: ‘The splendour of the surroundings – the trees, the pond and grandeur of The Holmes – set the artwork off perfectly. It’s a privilege to have it displayed here.’
