Fancy a cuppa? New mugs available in Icon Range
Press release issued: 8 March 2012
Eye-catching mugs are the latest addition to a new range of merchandise, featuring iconic buildings and symbols linked to the University of Bristol. Local artist Susan Taylor created the Icon Range to celebrate the history and popularity of the University, initially turning her vibrant green, turquoise and black design into a tea towel.
Two mugs have now been added to the range, with one focusing on the sweeping staircase in the Students’ Union and another incorporating key images associated with the University and the city.
Susan is well-known for creating poster-style prints using digital illustration and hand-drawn ink drawings with experimental typefaces. She cites war-time revolutionary posters, vintage book illustrations and the Bauhaus movement as her inspiration.
The University of Bristol design features the familiar outlines of the Wills Memorial Tower, several halls of residences, Royal Fort House and The Victoria Rooms – where the first conversation about the formation of the University took place. Dotted between the main images are bicycles, mortar boards and even Winston Churchill, the University’s Chancellor for 36 years until his death in 1965.
Leanne Bramall, Merchandise Co-ordinator at the University of Bristol’s Students’ Union, said: “We first introduced the tea towel just before Christmas and it’s proved to be really popular. Susan’s wonderful design has lent itself well to the mugs too, which make a great souvenir and showcase just how many of the city’s sights are linked to the University.”
The mugs and tea towels are now available to buy for £7.99 and £7.50 respectively from the Students’ Union, the Info Point on Tyndall Avenue or online: www.ubushop.co.uk
