Local residents step out for dinner dance

14 March 2012

On Saturday evening, over 50 local residents gathered at St Matthew’s Church in Kingsdown to enjoy a dinner dance hosted by volunteers from the University of Bristol Students’ Union (UBU).

Twenty student volunteers worked together to put on the spring dinner dance – preparing a three-course meal and providing entertainment for the guests. Highlights of the evening included a performance by Bristol Le Roc Dance Society and the Bristol University Jazz Orchestra, which got everyone up on their feet and dancing.

Participants were enthusiastic in their praise of the event. One guest, from Sunnymead Nursing Home, said: ‘We’ve had a fantastic evening; I’ve not been up dancing like that in years!’

The dinner dance is an annual event which forms part of UBU Volunteering’s 30 community projects. Guests from several of these projects attended the dance including Daycentre – a Wednesday lunch club for older people; Saturday Club – a social group for adults with learning disabilities; and Network – a social group for adults with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Local community groups and nursing homes were also invited.

Other services provided by UBU student volunteers include painting and decorating, gardening and dog-walking. University staff and members of the public can also volunteer with UBU. If you are interested in joining any of these activities, please contact Georgina Cove, Student Volunteering Coordinator, on 0117 954 5888, or visit the volunteering page on the UBU website.
