Users needed to test Green Doors app

Press release issued: 25 September 2013

The University of Bristol’s Department of Computer Science has been working with Bristol Green Doors to produce an Android and iPhone smartphone application for this year’s open homes event and members of the public are being asked to test it over the weekend [28 and 29 September].

The app will allow visitors to not only see where the houses are located and which retrofitting measures are installed, but will also provide the opportunity to take notes, use a filter to find houses with specific measures, save houses to a shortlist, and contact some householders with queries after the event.

Dr Elaine Massung, research assistant in the Department of Computer Science, said: “If you have a smart phone and are planning on visiting open homes, we are keen for members of the public to download the Green Doors app and test it for us over the weekend.

“Any feedback received will be invaluable in making sure the app is as useful and user friendly as possible.”

A new feature that is being trialled is the use of QR codes in each house that correspond to the installed measures; when scanned by the app, the codes will be saved and a personalised report later produced to give visitors links to suppliers and additional information.

The app is available for iPhones/Pad/Pods through the App Store or Android systems through Google Play.

To participate in the research, please download and register the app, and email Elaine.Massung@bristol.ac.uk.  Surveys about people’s experience with the app will be sent at a later time.
