Bristol’s official fanfare to be played from the top of the Wills Memorial Tower

Press release issued: 23 July 2015

A fanfare specially composed for Bristol will be played for the first time on Monday [27 July] at four locations across the city, sounding the start of the Bristol Proms. Three trumpeters will play from the top of the tower of the University of Bristol’s Wills Memorial Building, in what promises to be an extraordinary acoustic experience.

A competition to write the fanfare, which has been gifted to the city, was launched by Bristol Proms in March.

Over 40 pieces of music were submitted, with Wiltshire composer David Mitcham's 'At the Top of the Tide' being announced as the winner yesterday.

David is an award-winning composer who works extensively with the BBC Natural History Unit. He’ll join the musicians at the top of the tower at 1.30pm to hear the piece being played.

You can catch the fanfare at the following places:

  • 8.30am outside the Engine Shed, next to Temple Meads Station
  • 11am on the Watershed balcony
  • 1.30pm from the top of Wills Memorial Tower
  • 5.30pm at Bristol Old Vic

The Bristol Proms, a collaboration between Bristol Old Vic and U-Live, runs until 1 August. More information is available on the Bristol Proms website.
