Bristol medic to serve third term as co-chair of the British Medical Association’s Medical Student Committee

Harrison Carter, a medical student at the University of Bristol, is the first in the BMA’s history to be elected as co-chair of its UK Medical Student Committee for a third term.

The committee represents more than 27,000 BMA student members from UK medical schools on a wide range of issues affecting medical students. Members of the committee also sit on high level policy forums that deal with topics relating to the finance, education and welfare of medical students across the UK.

Harrison said: “I am delighted to further the Bristol tradition and continue my work representing the views of medical students to the UK Government and others working in health policy, such as the General Medical Council and the Medical Schools Council.”

Current areas of interest to the committee include reform of postgraduate medical education through the Shape of Training Review, oversubscription of Foundation Year training and widening participation to medicine.

Harrison follows in the footsteps of other Bristol Medical students Nick Deakin and Marion Matheson, who both served terms as the committee’s chair (2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively). The BMA’s Junior Doctors Committee was led by Bristol Graduate, Dr Ben Molyneux from 2012-2013.
