Over €9M in European grants awarded to Bristol academics

The European Research Council (ERC) will award a total of €9M in grants to Bristol academics under its Advanced Grant scheme. These grants support exceptional, professorial-level research leaders in undertaking ground-breaking, high-impact research projects.

University of Bristol recipients of the ERC Advanced Grants include:

  • Professor Stephen Mann in the School of Chemistry for his project 'Synthetic Cellularity via Protocell Design and Chemical Construction'.
  • Professor Jeffrey Bowers in the School of Experimental Psychology for his project 'Generalization in Mind and Machine'.
  • Professor Jonathan Keating in the School of Mathematics for his project ‘Log Correlations and Random Matrices’.
  • Professor Daniel Robert in the School of Biological Sciences for his project ‘Mechanisms of electroreception in bees and other terrestrial animals’.

"The European Research Council’s Advanced Grants are awarded to established academics who have a track-record of significant research achievements. The sole criterion for these grants is excellence.

"The fact that four University of Bristol academics have been awarded such significant grants is testament to the exceptional nature of their research, and reinforces the University of Bristol’s position at the forefront of ground-breaking research," said Professor Nishan Canagarajah, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research.
