How to get involved

phone in handNightline is entirely run by other students, not trained counsellors. We depend on new members joining all the time, throughout the year. We are always keen to hear from people who are interested in becoming volunteers. You do not have to have any experience of working in this field, you just have to commit to spending three or four nights per term answering the phones and e-mails in a non-judgemental, friendly atmosphere.

Nightline is totally anonymous, so even your friends won't know that you do it. We provide all the training that you need before you first answer the phone, so don't think you will be 'thrown in at the deep end'!

If you are at all interested, or perhaps want to discuss it a bit more, please do contact us by filling in this form or pop by our stall at 'Fresh'. Any contact would not tie you into joining - you can change your mind at any time. Either way, we would love to hear from you.

Why volunteer?

A few of many reasons that make being a Nightliner a thoroughly rewarding experience:

  • Make a positive impact to the student community in Bristol.
  • Be part of a nationally recognised organisation.  Bristol Nightline is affiliated to National Nightline, a registered charity.
  • Develop many transferable skills that will be useful in your studies and life after university.  However no previous experience is required, all volunteers are fully trained from scratch.
  • Being an 8pm-8am service, it is easy to fit around work and other committments.  Nightliners choose when they volunteer.
  • Gain valuable volunteering experience for careers in care professions.
  • Like any society you get to meet a diverse group of interesting and like-minded people.  We have regular socials and meetings so you'll get to make many new friends both at UoB and UWE.
  • Opportunities for committee positions with extra responsibility, again like conventional societies.
