Directions

I. Directions by train:

There are two mainline railway stations in Bristol, Temple Meads and Parkway. If you have a choice, you are advised to arrive at Temple Meads as it is much closer to the University precinct and operates a free Hospital and University Shuttle Bus service to the University. Alternatively, bus services 8/8A or 9/9A run to the precinct every 10 minutes during the day. Please note the following bus information (from Temple Meads) for the main University buildings:

  • for Senate House and other buildings in the centre of the University precinct ? including the Institute for Advanced Studies ? take service 9 or 9A, disembark outside the Hawthorns on Elton Road
  • for the Wills Memorial Building, the Berkeley Square, or the Washington Hotel take any service (8/8A/9/9A) and disembark at the Triangle (at the top of Park Street)

Taxis are always available in a taxi rank at Temple Meads.

It is a 30-45 minute walk from Temple Meads to the University precinct, although the last section is steeply up hill.

Parkway station is about six miles from the main precinct and you are recommended to take a taxi.

II. Directions by coach:

Marlborough Street Bus Station is situated in the centre of Bristol close to the University precinct.
It can be found on the University's precinct map (http://www.bris.ac.uk/university/maps/precinct.html).

For information about coach times and fares consult the National Express web pages (http://www.nationalexpress.com/).

To get to the University from the bus station you can:

  • catch the Hospital and University Shuttle Bus;
  • take a taxi (there is a taxi rank just outside the bus station);
  • walk (about 10 minutes). Leave the bus station via the Whitson Street exit.

Turn right up Lower Maudlin Street and left at the top into Upper Maudlin Street. Continue along Upper Maudlin Street, passing the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Children's Hospital on your right-hand side. Walk straight on over several sets of traffic lights. Just after the entrance to the multistorey car park on your left, turn right into Woodland Road. At the top of the hill is a crossroads. Turn right (into Tyndall Avenue). Senate House is on the corner.

III. Directions by bus:

Bus services 8/8A or 9/9A travel from the train station and the city centre via Clifton or Redland to the University precinct. The number 8 stops by the Berkeley Centre on Queen's Road opposite the Wills Memorial Building, while the number 9 continues from the Berkeley Centre up towards Senate House.

IV. Directions by car:

The city has excellent road links, making access to the city from all over the UK straightforward. The M4 and M5 motorways put both London and Birmingham within a two-hour drive, while the M32 allows direct access from the M4 to the heart of the city. See our approach routes map (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/university/maps/approaches.html).

Directions from M32

  •  Exit the M4 at junction 19 marked for the M32. Follow the M32 into Bristol.
  • The motorway terminates a few hundred metres from a major T junction. Carry straight on from the end of the motorway and turn right at the junction (following signs to Bus Station and Clifton).
  • You come to a roundabout where you should take the second exit (following signs to Bus Station, Royal Infirmary and Clifton).
  • Go straight on over several sets of traffic lights. Just after the entrance to the multistorey car park on your left, turn right into Woodland Road.
  • At the top of the hill is a crossroads. Turn right (into Tyndall Avenue). Senate House is on the corner.

Car parking
There is limited visitor car parking available at the University. It is the responsibility of the department expecting a visitor to book a space in advance. Alternative parking in central Bristol is difficult. There are multistorey car parks about ten minutes' walk away from the main precinct as shown on the map  or you can consult Bristol City Council's car park finder. There is very limited visitor car parking available at the University.

V. Directions by air:
