The department holds a weekly research seminar, with invited speakers. There are usually two active reading groups in the department, one in the area of ethics and political philosophy, the other in the area of epistemology, metaphysics and philosophy of mind.
Our postgraduates usually run an informal seminar at which they present their own work to each other. Various workshops have also been arranged by postgraduates - see Department Events for more details of them.
For those with a special interest in the philosophy of science, there is a regular philosophy of physics seminar.
In addition, we participate in OXBRISE, a philosophy of physics seminar held jointly with staff and graduates at Oxford University and the LSE.
The department regularly hosts conferences. The Department has successfully hosted in Joint Session of the Mind Association and Aristotelian Society and the annual conferences of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science and the British Society for Ethical Theory in 2007.
James Ladyman and Alexander Bird were editors of the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science from September 2003 to September 2011. The journal Imprints is edited in the department by Chris Bertram and publishes papers in political philosophy and social theory.
