MA in Philosophy and History of Science

The MA starts in October each year, and runs for 12 months for full-time students, and 24 months for part-time students. The taught component comprises six units which are taught over two Teaching Blocks. The research component, the Dissertation, is written over the Summer and submitted in September.  The timetable for full-time students usually has the following format:

Teaching Block 1 (Autumn) Teaching Block 2 (Spring) Summer

Option 2 Option 4

Part-time students generally stagger their options across two years, and write the dissertation during the Summer of their second and final year.

You must then choose four more units. The units offered this year are:

With the permission of the Programme Director, you may choose to replace one of the units above with a Project Unit.  These consist of advanced research on a particular topic, and are taught by individual tutorials.  You will meet regularly with an adviser, and write an extended essay of 5,000 to 6,000 words

Dissertation

The dissertation is produced independently, and is a piece of original research. It is 15,000 words long and is submitted in September.
