I organise the Systems of the Body 1 unit for our MB ChB (medical programme) and through my role as preclinical dean I participate in pastoral care and the day-to-day running of years 1 and 2 of the BDS (dental programe). I chair the faculty ethics committee that has an advisory role on the ethical use of human participants in research.
My teaching is enhanced and informed by my clinical practice as a clinical assistant emergency physician at Frenchay hospital. I am a core member of the AIMS CETL (Applied and Integrated Medical Sciences Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) and have been instrumental in the novel use of human patient simulators for biomedical sciences education. I amexternal examiner at the University of Glamorgan (BSc Medical Sciences) and Brighton and Sussex medical school. I am a member of the Physiological society working group that is currently drafting a national guideline for the core physiology content of medical degrees in the United Kingdom and a founder member of the Academy of Medical Educators.
The physician without physiology and chemistry flounders along in an aimless fashion, never able to gain any accurate conception of disease, practicing a sort of popgun pharmacy, hitting now the malady and again the patient, he himself not knowing which. Sir William Osler (1849-1919)
I teach on the professional programmes of Medicine and Dentistry as well as our honours degree in Physiological science. I lecture on topics including cell biology, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and integrated aspects of clinical physiology such as acid base homeostasis. I provide tutorial support and practical classes to complement lectures. One of my favourite aspects of teaching is the opportunity to guide final year BSc students through their research projects such as the evaluation of the fidelity of the human patient simulator.
I run a training session for new postgraduates to help and encourage them to become effective tutors. I also participate in postgraduate training for doctors through informal teaching sessions at Frenchay Hospital Emergency Department and lecturing on Scientific Basis of Surgical Practice course for trainee surgeons.
