Research within the School of Physiology and Pharmacology is conducted across three broad themes: cardiovascular science, cell biology and neuroscience. We have interests in many areas of work such as the roles of the CNS in hypertension, GPCRs in platelet activation, mechanisms of synaptic plasticity and learning and memory, acute and neuropathic pain mechanisms. Much of this research is inter-disciplinary, involving national and international collaboration with colleagues in other schools, universities and industry. This fosters a dynamic research environment that is well supported with funding from many sources, particularly from the MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust and British Heart Foundation.
Recent major refurbishment of laboratories and facilities has enabled the provision of an excellent research environment, with extensive laboratory space and specialist facilities. Members of the School are also part of cross-School and cross-Faculty research organisations such as the MRC Centre for Synaptic Plasticity, the Bristol Heart Institute and Bristol Neuroscience.
