Professor Richard Huxtable
Richard Huxtable was in the first cohort of PhD students to graduate through the Centre of Ethics in Medicine, and is now Director of the Centre, and Professor of Medical Ethics and Law at the University of Bristol. Richard’s research primarily concerns legal and ethical issues in end-of-life decision-making, surgery and paediatrics. He is the author of Law, Ethics and Compromise at the Limits of Life: To Treat or Not to Treat? (Routledge-Cavendish, 2012), Euthanasia, Ethics and the Law: From Conflict to Compromise (Routledge-Cavendish, 2007) and (with Dickenson & Parker) The Cambridge Medical Ethics Workbook (CUP, 2nd edn, 2010), plus numerous articles and chapters. His research has been funded by organisations including the Wellcome Trust and the European Commission and he has given invited presentations at the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Surgeons, as well as conferences worldwide.

Giles Birchley
Giles Birchley joined the Centre for Ethics in Medicine as Research Fellow working on the BABEL project. Funded by a prestigious Wellcome Trust collaborative award BAlancing Best interests in health care, Ethics and Law (BABEL) explores the way the best interests standard – and its mooted alternatives – is used and understood in legal and medical decisions.

Mari-Rose Kennedy
Mari-Rose Kennedy joined the Centre for Ethics in Medicine as Research Associate on the emPOWER project. This project explored how artificial muscles could radically transform treatment options in the future and effectively turn back the body clock.

Alice Toms
Alice was undertaking a PhD to explore the regulatory challenges of surgical innovation, funded by the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre. Alice was supervised in the Centre by Richard Huxtable and Giles Birchley.

Helen Smith
Helen is a critical care nurse, and was undertaking a PhD exploring the ethical and legal challenges of using artificial intelligence to inform healthcare decision making. Helen was supervised in the Centre by Jonathan Ives. Helen now works at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine as a Research Associate.

Guy Schofield
Guy is a palliative medicine doctor interested in palliative care, medical ethics and global health. In particular he is interested in the normative elements of palliative care provision and how these might alter across differing global settings. His PhD research investigated the day-to-day ethical challenges experienced by healthcare practitioners working in palliative care in Kampala, Uganda, and was supported by the Wellcome Trust. Guy was supervised in the Centre by Richard Huxtable. Guy is now an Honorary Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine.
