Listed here are current funding opportunities for social scientists interested in AMR research:

Antimicrobial Resistance in a Global Context - a cross-council call in partnership with the Department of Health

This call has two stages, an obligatory developmental phase to provide seed funding followed by a full consortia phase. This call will support truly interdisciplinary teams conducting high quality innovative research to better understand the challenge posed by anti-bacterial resistance in Lower and Middle Income Countries. It is anticipated that the research supported will help build capacity in this area of research, both in the UK and in partner countries.

Key Dates

Developmental Stage:

Launch 3 May 2017
Deadline 11 July 2017
Panel Review  September 2017
Awards start  by 1 October 2017

AHRC: AMR in the indoor and built environment

This call is now closed. The following is for information only.

The Arts and Humanities Research Council, as a part of the Cross-council AMR initiative, is inviting applications for interdisciplinary research examining ways to meet the threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the indoor and built environment. Building on previous calls funded by the Research Councils, this call is explicitly intended to facilitate an arts and humanities contribution to the ongoing scientific research in tackling AMR.

Whilst applications for this call will be required to contain significant arts and humanities methodologies, a collaborative approach is encouraged in order to include expertise and insights from as broad a range of subject disciplines as possible. Within this cross-disciplinary approach, a number of key areas have been identified that all projects will be expected to engage with:

  • Places, Spaces, Cultures and Practices: Interactions with and within the Indoor and Built Environment
  • Pathways and Journeys through the Built Environment and the Dynamics of Change
  • Creative, Collaborative and Disruptive Innovation, Experiments and Design in Indoor/ Built Environments
  • Reflection, Learning, Data and Valuing Impacts from Changes to the Indoor/ Built Environment

Full details of the call are available on the AHRC website.

Deadline for applications: 28 February 2017

AHRC will be holding an all-day networking and information event in Central London on 30 November 2016. The event will provide an opportunity to discuss research opportunities relevant to the call and for interested researchers and collaborators to network. Further details of the event and how to apply for a place can be found on AHRC's Events pages.

ESRC Theme 4 call

This call is now closed. The following is for information only.

The ESRC, in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) are pleased to invite applications for cross disciplinary proposals on the topic of behaviour relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The closing dates are:

  • Collaborative grants: 16.00 on 8 September 2016

UK-China Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative

This call is now closed. The following is for information only.

The ESRC with the Medical Research Council (MRC) the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) are inviting proposals to the UK-China AMR Partnership Initiative:

http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding/funding-opportunities/uk-china-antimicrobial-resistance-initiative/

This initiative will provide funding for high quality collaborative research projects focussed on addressing the growing global burden of antimicrobial resistance, specifically antibacterial resistance of clinical and veterinary relevance in China.  The UK contribution to this call will be channeled from the Newton Fund. This is an initiative intended to strengthen research and innovation partnerships between the UK and emerging knowledge economies to promote economic development and social welfare of partner countries.

MRC are the leading research council for this call and queries should be directed to them in the first instance. However, the ESRC is very much involved and if there are any social science-specific queries then the ESRC are welcoming informal questions.

Cross Council Initiative for tackling AMR

The research councils have jointly identified 4 key themes to target funding investment.  ‘Theme 4: Behaviour within and beyond the health care setting’ is led by the ESRC and where they expect greatest input from social scientists but all 4 themes would welcome interdisciplinary approaches.  The call for applications to theme 4 is expected in spring 2016.
