Fees and funding

Tuition fees are charged according to the programme of study. Wherever possible, up-to-date fees are provided with each programme entry in this prospectus. Fees are quoted per year and are subject to annual review so are liable to rise each year. The tuition fee itself covers charges for tuition, examination, registration and a contribution towards the cost of membership of the University Union. Self-funded international students accepting a place on a taught postgraduate programme will need to pay a deposit of £1,000, which can be paid online or by cheque.

Tuition fees normally rise annually, broadly in line with inflation. There are two different rates of fees charged: those for UK/EU students, and those for overseas students.

Fee status (UK/EU and overseas students)

The University must assess fee status according to The Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007 and The Student Fees (Qualifying Courses and Persons) (England) Regulations 2007. We make a decision on your fee status only once your application has been received and processed, and an offer of study is made to you. Unfortunately fee status regulations are complex and depend on a number of factors, including residency and immigration. If you feel you have a more complicated case, please feel free to contact us for advice. However, please be aware that a decision on fee status is only made post-application and only if an offer of study is made to you.

Tuition fee payments

Tuition fees may be paid in full at registration or by two instalments. Payment may be made by cheque, direct debit or credit card. For further details email student-fees@bristol.ac.uk or call the Income Office on +44 (0117) 954 6372.

We charge a non-refundable application fee of £50 for the following programmes:

• Graduate Diploma in Economics
• MSc in Economics
• MSc in Economics, Accounting and Finance
• MSc in Economics and Econometrics
• MSc in Economics and Finance
• MSc in Economics and Public Policy
• MSc in Economics, Finance and Management
• MSc in Finance and Investment
• MSc in Management

If you are applying to one of these programmes, you will be prompted to make this payment. Payment can be made by debit or credit card only.

Please note: your application for any of the above programmes will not be reviewed until the application fee has been received.

Living costs in Bristol tend to be higher than in some other parts of the country, although less than in London. Currently, postgraduate students are advised that, in addition to tuition fees, they might need somewhere in the region of £800 to £900 per month.

Any scholarship funding you receive is likely to be based on the cost of living for a single student, and will not cover the costs of couples and families. Please ensure that you have sufficient funding in place for the full length of your programme.

In some cases, departments have access to programme-specific funding. We've provided some information about these options with the individual programme entries. However, we recommend that you also contact the department to which you are applying to enquire about any other possibilities, which they may be able to offer.

Applying for scholarships

In some cases, you will first need to hold an offer of study at Bristol before being able to apply for a scholarship. The Student Funding Office give details on the application process for the scholarships they list. Any Department allocated funding detailed on the relevant Department website will also be accompanied by application details.

Financial help

If you encounter unanticipated financial difficulty due to changes in circumstances after commencing studies, you should contact the Student Funding Office for advice.

Part-time work both inside and outside the University may be available through the University Jobshop.
