Programme overview

The Department of Russian has an outstanding record of research. We pride ourselves in our strong, active research culture, and the research interests of staff span a broad range of disciplinary emphases.

We can support postgraduate research in many areas within the following broad fields:

  • 19th- and 20th-century Russian prose fiction
  • 19th- and 20th-century Russian poetry
  • 19th- and early 20th-century Russian intellectual history
  • 20th-century Russian drama and theatre
  • Russian and Soviet cinema
  • Soviet history
  • Modern Russian cultural studies
  • 19th- and 20th-century Czech and Slovak literature
  • Russian and comparative literature
  • Russian Orthodox culture

The Department contributes to School and Faculty research themes, for instance Romanticism, Conflict and Culture, and Testimonies and has strong connections with research centres in Russia.

Our postgraduates are a key part of the research community, and are integrated into regular staff-student research seminars, as well as the research activities of the School of Modern Languages and the Faculty.

Professor Michael Basker, Pushkin and Romanticism; Silver Age poetry and prose fiction; 19th and 20th century Russian poetry.

Dr Rajendra Chitnis, Russian fiction since the thaw; Czech and Slovak literature from the 19th century to the present.

Dr Ruth Coates, 19th-century Russian literature; 19th-century and early 20th-century Russian intellectual history; Russian Orthodox culture.

Dr Claire Shaw, History of the Soviet Union, particularly the formation of Soviet identity and the history of marginal groups; contemporary fashion and public space.
