Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Consistently rated as one of the world's top Universities, Bristol University's reputation for excellence in teaching and research means that we attract the best clinicians and academics to work with us.

Professor Peter Mathieson, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Overview

We are committed to providing the highest standards of teaching in an excellent research environment.

Our major resources are our staff and our students: academic staff include world-leading researchers. Our resources in Bristol itself include the £20m Dorothy Hodgkin Building in the city centre and a share in a new, state-of-the-art `Learning and Research' building on the Southmead Hospital site.

The Faculty has three Schools:

Research themes in the School of Social and Community Medicine cover genetic and life-course epidemiology, public health and health services research, primary health care, psychiatry, community child and adolescent health, and ethics in medicine.

In the School of Clinical Sciences, research groups cover the areas of neuroscience and endocrinology, cardiovascular and renal research, infection and immunity.

The School of Oral and Dental Sciences is an acknowledged leader in oral and dental health, and a recent £13m redevelopment of the Dental School ensures that we offer the best facilities to our students.

The breadth of courses we offer together with our success in recruiting an international cohort of students ensures a dynamic experience for all who choose us.

Strengths of the Faculty

We have excellent working relationships with our NHS partners in and around Bristol and its neighbouring towns and cities: our medical students receive much of their clinical education and training in seven clinical academies, each based in a hospital. This academy-based teaching model is unique to Bristol and is popular, novel and innovative.
